I have a little obsession with white. When it comes to decorating I just love fresh white clean walls. I just think when you add the right pop of colour the white walls keeps the room looking bright and fresh. But when it came to decorating the entrance hall I knew I would regret white.
Its the room in the house with the dirtiest walls. We all come piling through the door, in all weathers. The dog will come in after a walk and have a good shake, the children come in and lean against the wall while taking off their shoes. I just knew white would spell disaster.
Then I got some inspiration from Instagram and Pinterest and decided Navy would be the main colour. We already had some copper accessories which I knew would work really well with navy, so it was perfect.
When I first shared my idea with James, I was greeted with a firm, no that will be too dark. I mentioned it to a couple of friends, and although they were polite I think they thought the same too.
But when it comes to decor, I kind of take the lead and just go all guns blazing, because well its only paint! It can soon be changed can’t it. I picked up a few sample pots from our local B&Q, tested it and fell in love.
We chose a B&Q own brand durable paint in the shade Marine. I am hoping the navy will look cleaner for longer, but I needed something washable for when it does need a wipe over.
Our Navy Entrance Hall
I am so pleased with it. We used to have dark brown old doors. I would have liked to install solid oak doors but we have so many doors to replace we opted for the simple white panel doors. The white doors against the Navy just makes everything look so crisp.
We had this carpet laid on the stairs and upstairs landing a couple of months ago. I like striped carpet but I wasn’t sure full stripes would work with the shape of our stairs and landing. When I saw this option on our local carpet shops Facebook page I loved it. The landing is just plain grey carpet with the stripes only on the up-stands on each step, I am so pleased with it.
I picked up this stool in Ikea recently. Its perfect for putting on shoes, I just love the simplicity of it.
This mirror was given to us by a friend a while ago. We didn’t have anywhere to put it in our old house so it was stored in the garage. I have now given in another spray of paint to freshen it up and its as good as new. I considered painting in in a copper tone but I loved it in gold and didn’t want to spoil it.
We all love it, everyone who doubted that it would be too dark has completely changed their mind.
The next job is to paint the walls going up the stairs and the landing upstairs, they will be in my favourite white. But I need James to paint that for me. The wall at the bottom of the stairs goes straight up to the top of the house, and I am not good on a ladder. One day it will be completely finished, but for now I love how far it has come.
